Manipur police destroy opium-producing poppy plant

Guwahati, February 3, 2019:

Due to the rampant practice of poppy plant cultivation in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, the authorities have to be very alert in order to seek and destroy the opium-producing plant. The practice of Tengnoupal police destroying poppy plants is not that uncommon and yesterday, they did it again at Lamkang Khunyai and Lamkang Khunkha hill ranges.

Yesterday, authorities in Tengnoupal destroyed about 220 acres of poppy cultivation having the potential to yield about 1540 kgs of opium, the highly addictive painkiller. And the value of the crop? A whopping 7 crores 70 lakhs!

A team comprising of many high-ranked officials from the Tengnoupal administration oversaw the operations.
