Mohan Saikia, hailing from Assam's Sivasagar district, is an artisan who makes bamboo artefacts. Saikia has also made books, crafted out from bamboo. He has prepared about 200 books, made solely out of bamboo. The 'bamboo man' has lined up 40 more books to be crafted.
Saikia, who hails from Bokota village, has tried to preserve the culture of Assam through his artwork. He has written Borgeet, Gunomala, Ahom Sahitya (literature) and many others using bamboo. To add on to his skills, Saikia has also made 10 garments solely out of bamboo.
Mohan Saikia has tried to preserve Assamese culture in a whole new way and he has also set up a modest museum to preserve century-old products that are the Pride of the Assamese culture
Mohan Saikia's efforts would be more fruitful if Government extends the required support to this very talented craftsman.
Assam is rich in sylvan resources and most of its forests are richly stocked with bamboos of various species. The State is one of the largest bamboo producing states in India and forms an integral part of the culture, lifestyle and economy of the people.
There is a social background of bamboo in Assam that finds a place in ritual and recreation, in culture and ceremony and many people still depend on it for their livelihood, and for household and functional uses.
