Meghalaya CM stresses on more discussion regarding Assam-Meghalaya border issues

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday has stated that 12 disputed areas in Assam-Meghalaya border belongs to the state, in a meeting held with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Meghalaya Secretariat.

However, Himanta Biswa Sarma also produced supporting documents to claim that the areas belonged to Assam.

Later both the chief ministers have agreed on reviewing each of these spots and come to a conclusion. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has invited Sangma to Guwahati on August 6 to sit with the second round of talks regarding the border issues between the two states.

Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Director-General of Police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Principal Secretary to CM, Samir Kumar Sinha, Commissioner & Secretary, GD Tripathi were also present in the meeting to discuss the long- pending border issues between the two states.

Meghalaya Chief Secretary MS Rao, Additional Chief Secretary RV Suchiang, Commissioner-Secretary R. Lyngdoh, Home & Political Secretary C.V.D. Diengdoh represented Meghalaya government along with CM Conrad Sangma during the discussion.

Talking to reporters, after the meeting, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The discussion was fruitful but in view of contradictory claims, there would have more discussion and review so that a lasting solution could be reached.”

Echoing the same, Conrad Sangma said that as it was a long pending issue, it would take some more time as well as consultation for an amicable and accepted solution to both the states.'
