Minority Youth dies in Hailakandi communal violence

Hailakandi, May 11, 2019:

Sad tidings from Hailakandi district in Assam as a youth succumbed to his injuries after clashes erupted in the Barak Valley district.

The youth, who has been identified as 28-year-old Jamir Hussain, was being taken to hospital after he sustained bullet injuries after authorities opened fire during the communal violence in the town. But unfortunately, the youth died on the way to the hospital on Friday. He was a resident of Nayanpur in Hailakandi.

Sources have informed that nine people were grievously injured and were taken to Silchar Medical on Friday. Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in three districts - Hailakandi, Cachar, and Karimganj. Moreover, the Army has taken over the situation and a battalion of troops has also been deployed.

The clashes occurred yesterday after some Muslims were prohibited from offering prayers on the road in front of the old mosque at Marwari Patti in the hub of Hailakandi town.
