The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya has condemned the defacement of an AASU memorial at Basugaon in Assam's Chirang district.
Samujjal Bhattacharya condemned the incident and stated that the memorial had been defaced to disrupt the NRC process which is in its last stages. Samujjal Bhattacharya also alleged the miscreants do not want a Bangladeshi-free NRC. He further appealed that the miscreants must be punished.

Miscreants had earlier on Monday defaced a myrtyrs' column of the AASU and blackened the inscription on the martyrs' tomb.
It may be mentioned that in 2017, a lesser known organization called Nikhil Bharat Udbastu Samannay Samiti (NBBUSS) had damaged the martyrs’ memorial of AASU and had vandalised their office at Silapathar in Dhemaji district of Assam which later NBBUSS leader Subodh Biswas.
On the other hand, MLA Aminul Islam has alleged that many Objections were entered after the final date of filing Objections. He further accused NRC officials of forging signatures in the name of ‘jatiya dayitya’ (indigenous responsibility).
Islam further accused senior student leaders of orchestrating this conspiracy of depriving genuine citizens. He further alleged that the leaders are afraid they will be deprived of their source of income. He also alleged they have been collecting funds in the name of fighting foreigner influx into the State.
The controversy over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) shows no signs of abating as many organisations have come out to question the legality of the procedure in the state of Assam.
The Basugaon police is on the lookout for the miscreants who defaced the memorial.
