Guwahati: Assam recently witnessed a major political turn of events when top Congress leaders of the state decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) overnight. These events had many questioning if others from Congress or other parties would join the BJP in the coming days.

With these questions in minds of people, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday hinted there might be more by-elections in the upcoming four and half years. He made the statement after he was questioned about by-elections of the Majuli constituency which now has no legislator as former CM Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from it recently.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "It would take at least a month to complete the by-election of the particular seat but let us now just focus on the work. In the coming years, we would witness several by-elections."

It may be mentioned, that recently, senior Congress leaders Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain had quit the party and joined the BJP. They had then contested in the by-elections from the BJP and retained their seats.
