A ‘drug mafia’ sustained injuries in a police firing following a clash erupted between police and public in Assam’s Nagaon today. The incident took place at Nagaon’s Borbojar.

The man, who has been identified as Arzul Ali, was suspiciously selling drugs defying lockdown enforced to prevent the spread of coronavirus, police said.

During a telephonic conversation, Abhijit Gaurav, Superintendent of Police, said, “Ali attacked one of the police personnel and tried to snatch his weapon following a scuffle over suspiciously selling drugs defying lockdown. Later, police had to resort fire in self-defense.”

The SP further said that police were trying to arrest him for a long time. “He (drug mafia) was an Assam police constable and removed from police for his involvement in illegal activities,” he added.

It may be mentioned that a complete lockdown was enforced acrros the country on March 25 initially for 21 days which was later extended to prevent the spread of COVID-19. COVID-19 has infected over 81 thousand people and claimed over 2500 lives across the country while infected 86 people and claimed two lives in Assam so far.

However, the third phase of the lockdown was enforced with considerable relaxation on May 4 for two weeks. Meanwhile, the Assam government urged the Cental government to extend the lockdown by two weeks more.
