Guwahati, December 28, 2019:

Former Congress President and Prime Ministerial hopeful Rahul Gandhi on Saturday thundered at the PM Narendra Modi-led BJP Government and accused the party of tearing apart the country, while serving the interests of corporate donors.

At a program in Guwahati that began with the Assamese anthem -- O Mur Apunar Dexh -- Gandhi came out swinging against the BJP party and alleged that the party's agenda is to divide the people and fill the pockets of 20 rich industrialists.

India, Gandhi claimed, was not too long ago a paragon of economic development, but he lamented that BJP policies have left the country's once robust economy in tatters.

Gandhi opined that the country has taken a turn for the worse. "At one point of time, the American President used to cite our example -- if there is one country that can compete with us, it is India", Rahul reminisced, adding that the country's growth was then pegged at a phenomenal 9%.

"Now, BJP has destroyed everything. In 35 years, unemployment is at its highest. Assam youths are unemployed. By demonetization and GST, Modi destroyed the strength of the motherland", Rahul lamented.

The senior Congress leader alleged that Modi only knows one thing -- to divide the people. "The PM must answer the people. 'Make in India' failed -- tell the people how many factories were built in Assam. Today, the youths wander about aimlessly", he said.

At one point, Rahul sent gasps through the sizable gathering at the Veterinary playground by alleging that after demonetization, Modi distributed 3 lakh 50 thousand crore rupees to his rich industrialist friends.

Rahul explained, "Assamese people have to understand -- the Modi agenda is to make the people in Assam fight -- to make the people in India fight -- and distribute the money to his industrialist friends -- that is Modi's plan."

Rahul's visit to Guwahati has come in the midst of the nationwide furor over the amendment of the Citizenship Act, that first sparked protests in Assam. Apprehensions in Assam are still high, as the state shares highly porous borders with neighboring country Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Assam is heating up ahead of the Assembly election to be held in 2020. Whereas BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the party is headed for a landslide win by grabbing 100 seats, Congress leader Tarun Gogoi has demanded an immediate "referendum" and an early election, as a challenge.

Assam is seen as a key battleground for both parties, with the BJP making its foray into the uncharted territories in the Northeast by first claiming Assam from the clutches of a Tarun Gogoi-led Congress.
