NCC Brahmaputra Expedition Commemorating 'Vir' Lachit Borphukan Flagged Off

Guwahati, October 16, 2019:

In a very first of its kind of riverine adventure activity in the North East India, sixty NCC Naval Wing Cadets of North East Region undertook a Sailing Expedition on the mighty Brahmaputra river from Bishwanath Chirali to Guwahati, under the aegis of NCC Directorate, Shillong.

The NCC Directorate NER has organised the sailing expedition by NCC Cadets in order to commemorate the great Ahom Warrior, Vir Lachit Borphukan.

The expedition was flagged off by Major General Bipin Bakshi, VSM ADG NER NCC Directorate on 16th October 2019 from Biswanath Ghat amidst grand fanfare. MLA Pramod Borthakur handed over the flag to the expedition leader. A colourful cultural program by NCC cadets preceded the flagging off ceremony.  The function was attended by Brigadier KS Rao Group Commander, NCC Group Tezpur, and the SP Biswanath Chariali.

While briefing the press, Major General Bipin Bakshi, stressed that aim of the expedition is to rekindle the memories of the epic bravery of the the Assamese people, while fostering a spirit of adventure amongst the youth. "It will also bring to fore the rich heritage and remind the present generation of the valour displayed by the great Ahom general Lachit Borphukan and the first lady freedom fighter from Assam to be martyred, Kanaklata Barua", he said.

According to an official release, the expedition has been envisaged  to inculcate a spirit of adventure , leadership and team spirit amongst the NCC cadets, who have been training for over a month.
