NDA will win 37 of 47 seats in Assam that went to polls in first phase, claims Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah today said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will win more than 37 seats out of the 47 that went to polls in the first phase yesterday.

Addressing a press conference here on first phase of elections in Assam and West Bengal, Shah said, “The NDA will win more than 37 of the 47 seats where polling were held yesterday. This has been clearly indicated by the election machinery of the BJP ... In Assam, we will form the next government with more seats than what we have now.”

Shah also claimed that the BJP would win 26 out of 30 seats that went to polls in West Bengal in the first phase yesterday. He further claimed the BJP would form the government in the state with over 200 MLAs in the 294-seat house.

He said the massive support to the BJP in Assam was due to its performance over the past five years in power. “The mandate appears to me is clearly in favour of terrorism-free Assam, agitation-free Assam, progress and employment generation. Besides, the BJP’s promise to make Assam flood-free is another factor that has received the support,” Shah said.

Shah has been repeatedly saying in election meetings that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got the entire length of the Brahmaputra surveyed through satellite and the BJP, if voted to power, will make Assam flood-free by digging up lakes and ponds to accommodate excess water from the river. He has been saying that the ponds and lakes will be used for irrigation purpose as well as from tourism.

“I can also see a huge people’s support to the achievements of Sarbananda Sonowal-Himanta Biswa Sarma tandem,” Shah added.

Further, he said the peaceful conduct of first phase of polling in the two states was unprecedented and encouraging. “Both Assam and West Bengal were known for violence during polling in the past. But, this time it has been unprecedented that not a single life has been lost during polling in the first phase,” Shah said.
