Guwahati, January 12, 2019:

The North East Students’ Union (NESO) have called a ‘Black Day’ today in the North East in condemnation of the police brutality in Tripura where eighteen people were injured during the ‘bandh’ called on January 11.

The protests were being carried out across the North-eastern region on January 11 after the umbrella organization, NESO, had called a ‘bandh’ to protest the implementation of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The protesters had behaved in an “unruly” manner, as per West Tripura police superintendent Ajit Pratap Singh as some of them set shops on fire and pelted the police with stones.

Some protesters also sustained bullet injuries after the Tripura State Rifles opened fire as the protesters were blocking the NH-8 which connects Tripura and Assam. An ambulance transporting the injured was also seen being trashed by Tripura State Rifles personnel.

When (All Assam Students Union) AASU leader as well as NESO advisor went to see the injured protesters at Khumulwng hospital, he was stopped by the authorites.

Bhattacharya has condemned the incident and also slammed Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb, alleging that he cannot empathize with the local indigenous peoples as he is of foreign (Bengali) origin.
