“Nightingale of Assam” Dipali Borthakur passed away at 1:25pm on Friday at the age of 77. She was admitted to Nemcare Hospital due to poor health.
Her credits include popular songs such as: "Sonor Kharu Nalage Muk", "Jundhone Junalite", "Konmana Boroxire Sip", "Senai Moi Jau Dei", "O' Bondhu Somoi Pale Amar Phale", etc. She sang her last song "Luito nejabi boi" in 1969. She started her career early at the age of 17, in 1958 with All India Radio.
She was diagnosed with a rare motor neuron disease in the early 1970’s. In 1976, she married Nilpaban Baruah, an eminent artist and painter from Assam who set an example of unconditional love by taking care of the ailing singer who had been confined to a wheelchair.
The acclaimed singer had been awarded with the Padma Shri in 1998, Silipi Bota from Government of Assam in 2010, and the Aideu Handique Silpi Award by the Sadou Asom Lekhika Somaroh Samiti in 2012.
