Nizamuddin Markaz Attendees' Relatives Quarantined at Assam's 1000-Bed Sarusajai Facility

It needs mention here that as of yet, the number of coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in Assam stands at 16 and all of them have been linked to the Nizamuddin Markaz's Tablighi Jamaat.

Assam Health Minister on Thursday informed that the state administration has been able to track down a majority of those who happened to be present at the hotspot in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin.

The State's Helpline - 104, which has an intake capacity of 6000 calls per day has crossed all barriers and surpassed 9000 calls upto 10 PM on Thursday. The Health Minister took to Twitter to express his gratitude, "My gratitude to all the dedicated staff of 104."

During a press conference yesterday, Sarma said that Assam Government was keeping an eye on people who have returned from Nizamuddin. "457 people have been recognized by the Indian Government who went to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation. Of these, 276 names were collected via the 104 helpline. Many were there who informed to the authorities,” he had said.

732 people were set as the ‘target’ based on these collections, Sarma said. Many people have also been tracked who did not go to the Markaz, but passed the area by in New Delhi, Sarma said. Such people numbered 226. Thus, the number of people who had to be tracked numbered 503, Sarma informed.

The Government has so far identified 488 people, leaving only 15 people who are yet to be tracked down, Sarma said. Of 488 people who were tracked down, 361 samples have been collected, the Health Minister said, adding that 395 have been quarantined so far and a few samples are yet to be collected.

Apart from the people who went to Nizamuddin, 951 samples have been tested for the coronavirus in six centres across the state. All have been negative so far and the results of 98 samples are still awaited.

Meanwhile, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is being prepared with 162 ICU beds with ventilation. It has also set up a state-of-art Cath Lab in its Department of Cardiology, which will strengthen the diagnosis system for cardiac patients.

The Ministry is also planning to add 50 more ICU beds by Bohag Bihu later this month. Furthermore, a 256-slice CT scan machine has been added to the GMCH and a cath lab have also been added.

Coronavirus Update

Across the world, the number of coronavirus cases has skyrocketed past the 1 million mark and cases now stand at 1,015,877. Although 212,993 have recovered from the disease, 53,218 have died from complications. The United States has reported 245,193 cases, by far the highest number recorded in any country, and 6,088 have died so far.

Italy still leads the list of country with the highest number of casualties. 13,915 Italians have perished so far due to the virus.

In India, 2,543 people have been afflicted by the coronavirus so far. The death toll has risen to 72.
