Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), which is one of the most influential indigenous bodies in Assam, has reiterated its demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State as a safeguard against the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act.
AJYCP leader Palash Changmai told Inside Northeast, “The movement is a movement to protect the identity of the State. No to CAA, Yes to ILP will be our new slogan. Since the implementation of Clause 6 is a roundabout process, and a complicated legal procedure, we are aiming directly for the ILP. If Manipur can get it, why not us?."
“We are becoming minorities in our own lands, and we are losing political power and our rights. Thus, if we have the ILP, we will be able to keep tabs on the people visiting our lands", Changmai stated.
“This is a democratic movement, and we will challenge the Citizenship Amendment Act through a legal framework”, promised Changmai, adding that the protests against the Bill would be continued in several parts of the State of Assam.
Changmai also extended his support to the various economic blockades that have been staged in various parts of Assam as a mark of protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.
