"No Hindu-Muslim in Fight against COVID-19": AAMSU Leader on Nizamuddin Incident

Guwahati, April 2, 2020:

Condemning the islamophobia that has been on blatant display in certain sections of society in the after the aftermath of the Nizamuddin incident, All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) chief Azizur Rahman has called for a united fight against the coronavirus that has already infected 16 persons in the State.

"Over the past two days, we are extremely saddened at the criticism on both media and social media", said Rahman, and said that the negligence of a few people should not result in condemnation of an entire community or religion.

"There should not be Hindu-Muslim here. I appeal all sides to not bring uop Hindu-Muslim. All the people of Assam to ensure that the coronavirus does not harm us further must stand unitedly", Rahman further added.

At the same time, Rahman called forth the people to fight against the new coronavirus or COVID-19 that has taken the form of a global pandemic.

We want the people who went to the Tablighi Jamaat attendees, especially from Assam, must themselves come forward and contact the authorities and the nearby health centres. They should get their health check as per the Government protocol.

There is a report that some are on the run, we do not support that. People should not run and added that the people shpuld follow the rules laid down by the Government, including quarantine.

The student leader also appealed all, irrespective of religion, to intimate the local authorities about their travel history.

Making an appeal to the AAMSU workers in all districts, Rahman said that they should ensure that people who have come in from other regions who have come to Assam after the out "That not a single person is left out, the AAMSU workers must be aware ", he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that a religious ceremony in New Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz was thrust into the national limelight when it came to light that preachers from countries such as Indonesia were potential carriers of the virus strain. The Government earlier today announced around 400 cases, including 16 in Assam, had connections to the gathering which took place in March.

"We were informed about Tablighi Jamaat congregation's link to Covid-19 cases by Telangana. Since then we have carried out an intensive contact tracing and sampling process in the states where the attendees of this event had travelled to. So far, at least 400 positive cases have been identified from these states, which are linked with the Nizamuddin Markaz cluster," Lav Aggarwal, joint secretary, Union health ministry said.

It is pertinent to mention here that a red alert relating to the COVID-19 has been sounded in the Northeast Indian region ever since the first corona positive case was reported in the State of Manipur. With the numbers rising in neighboring Assam, the State is taking additional preventive measures. Two cases from Manipur and a single case each from Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have also been reported.
