Along with Uttar Pradesh, two North-eastern States are yet to frame rules to implement provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. This was stated by Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi in Lok Sabha on Friday.

Gandhi stated in a written reply: “Meghalaya and Nagaland have not framed the rules as child marriage is not in prevalence but they have adopted the Act.”

Incidentally, Meghalaya is among the top 10 States with highest percentage of child marriages, as per the “Statistical Analysis of Child Marriage in India” published in June last year by NGO Young Lives in collaboration with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The report was based on the 2011 census.
