Guwahati (Assam), September 25, 2018:

The claims and objections process for inclusion and exclusion of names from draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) began on Tuesday.

Under the claims process, over 40 lakh people, who were not included in part draft or complete draft of the NRC, will have to submit any of the ten prescribed documents to get their names included. Under the process of filing of objections, people can move NRC authorities seeking the deletion of names of individuals only if they are certain the individuals are not Indians but illegal immigrants.

The period for filing of claims and objections is of 60 days.

Although earlier there were 15 List-A documents based on which people had applied for inclusion of their names in NRC, the Supreme Court recently kept on hold five documents from the modalities of Standard Operating Procedure. An order on the five documents is likely to be passed by the court on October 23. The five documents are the NRC of 1951, pre-1971 voters’ lists, citizenship certificate, refugee registration certificate and ration cards.

Meanwhile, people were seen making beelines in front of NRC Seva Kendras on Tuesday.

The complete draft of NRC had the names of 2,89, 83,677 of total 3,29,91,384 applicants.
