Barpeta, July 9, 2019:

Another name has been enlisted in the suicide list during the ongoing proceedings of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) after being declared as a 'D' (or doubtful) Voter.

In a tragic incident, a person from Assam’s Barpeta district committed suicide out of fear of being excluded from the NRC. The incident was reported from Sunbari area under Gowardhana Police Station in Baksa district. The deceased has been identified as Ambar Ali.

Ambar Ali was the only source to financially support the family. He has left behind two sons and two daughters.

The locals said that despite belonging to the economically weaker section of society, Ambar somehow managed to go to Rangia for the NRC hearing as he was declared as a 'Doubtful -Voter', but lack of finance to visit further hearings forced him to commit suicide.

Following the incident, the All Bodo Minority Students' Union (ABMSU), Salbari unit have condemned the incident and threatened to launch massive protests due to harassment faced by the genuine Indian citizens by the Border Police and NRC authorities.
