The much-debated National Register of Citizens (NRC) has run into another impediment: the ongoing floods in Assam (which have affected lakhs of people across the state).
The officers engaged in the process of hearing is going on and senior officers including deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners, and circle officers are engaged in the job of carrying out quality checks.
At the same time, data entry operations is also going on so that everything is ready for the publication of NRC on time.
However, sources have admitted to the media that floods are affecting the process in some districts as senior officers are busy with flood relief works. But, at the same time, sources expressed confidence that the work would be completed on time to meet the deadline set by the Court for the publication of NRC.
It may be mentioned here that state and central Governments recently submitted affidavits in the Supreme Court seeking 20% of re verification in the districts bordering Bangladesh and 10% in other districts of the state.
Sources have stated that it is upto the Court to take a decision on the plea of the state and the central governments but the NRC co-orinator's office is getting ready to publish the final NRC on July 31 as per the earlier directive of the Court.
