The Members of the Hailakandi Press Club staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office against the assault on a correspondent of a Guwahati-based news channel by a police constable.
They submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the district Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi demanding exemplary punishment of the policeman involved in the assault of journalist.
The incident took place when a police constable identified as Rajesh Suklabaidya, on Sunday night stopped Rajesh Das, the Hailakandi correspondent of a Guwahati-based news channel on Sunday night at Hailakandi bazaar when he was going to drop a friend on his motorcycle.

Reportedly, the constable asked Das to show his driving licence. An argument took place between the two, and the constable allegedly started beating up the journalist who received multiple injuries.
The injured journalist was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
An FIR has been lodged by Rajesh Das at the Hailakandi Sadar police station against the police constable. The accused police constable Rajesh Suklabaidya has been already arrested for assaulting the journalist.
