GUWAHATI: Assam police have detained a person in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) booth president of Buridihing Gaong Panchayat in Tinsukia.
Joy Chandra Gogoi (46), a man from the same village, has been arrested by the police in connection with the murder amid ongoing investigations to nab the culprit.
Efforts are being made to recover the dagger used to commit the murder, police said.
BJP leader Devananda Gogoi was reportedly stabbed to death while was gardening in his house.
He was immediately rushed to a government hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Several leaders including chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma have condoled the death of the party worker and assured to bring justice to Gogoi and his family.
“Strongly condemn the brutal murder of @BJP4Assam karyakarta, Deba Gogoi, Booth President under Margherita LAC. My deepest condolences to his family & friends. Such acts of violence will not be tolerated & I assure that law will take its course to punish the guilty,” CM Sonowal wrote on Twitter.
Condoling the demise of the party member, state finance minister also took to Twitter and wrote, “Shocked & anguished to hear killing of Debananda Gogoi Ji, @BJP4India booth president of Buridihing Gaon Panchayat in Tinsukia. I condemn this act of violence."
Biswa Sarma has said that he will "see to it that the family gets justice."
