AGARTALA: The Tipraha Indigenous Peoples Regional Alliance (TIPRA) has scripted history by winning 18 seats out of 28 in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC), the counting for which is currently underway.

BJP has won 6 Seats, while ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) won 1 seat. Shockingly, both the Congress and CPIM -- formerly heavyweights in the state -- are yet to open their accounts.

Talking to InsideNE, TIPRA chief Pradyot Manikya expressed his elation for winning an 'absolute majority' and opined that his party "shall not compromise" on any of its key promises.

"We have won 18 Seats already and are leading in another Seat, so our final tally might be 19 Seats," Manikya told this publication.

The counting of votes for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections started at 8 am and is currently underway amid tight security arrangements across 16 sub-divisional magistrate offices here on Saturday.

The elections to the TTAADC were held on Tuesday across 1,244 polling stations for the 28 elected seats of the 30-member autonomous district council. They were earlier deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tripura police have made adequate security arrangements and no one other than the counting agents and the staff are allowed to enter the counting centres.

Tensions prevailed in Tripura after TIPRA chief and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma was attacked at Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office in West Tripura. The SDM office was also pelted with stones despite the security presence.

There were reports of violence and tension at Mohanpur. West Tripura Superintendent of Police Manik Lal Das told media that the police are investigating the issue.

Speaking to reporters Friday evening, Debbarma said he came under attack from a group of ‘armed goons’ who forced their way inside the SDM’s office where he had gone to enquire about credentials of his party’s counting agents for Saturday’s counting process.
