Print Media of Assam boycotts Government news & ads for 3 days

Guwahati, March 9, 2019:

Print media of Assam has boycotted the publishing of any Government news and advertisement to mark their protest against the State Government’s ignorance regarding the prevailing issues of the print media: the revision of the rates of advertisements since 2014, the price rise of newsprint and other printing materials and also on transportation cost.

The North East Newspaper Society (NENS) has announced to boycott the Assam Government’s news and ads for three days, i.e. March 10, 11 and 12. It is to be mentioned that the print media industry is going through a huge financial crisis.

As reported in the largely circulated newspaper, ‘Asomiya Pratidin’, the NENS met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal last year to address the issue faced by the newspaper houses, but even after completion of one year, no measures have been taken so far. Following this, the society has put forward three demands to the government: payment of dues of the government advertisements after every 2 months, revision of rates in government advertisements annually and centralised payment of Government advertisements on regular basis. NENS also took the decision that if the government fails to take any decision after the three days of protest, the society will also take other programmes to find a solution regarding the ongoing issues of Print media.
