Promod Boro celebrates his first Bihu as BTC Chief

TAMULPUR: Nearly a month after being elected as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) Chief Promod Boro celebrated a very traditional Bihu with close aides and family members at his native village in Tamulpur in Assam's Baksa district.

Joining the villagers at Sourabari, Boro, dressed in traditional attire, took part in the Bihu festivities earlier in the morning today. Around 9 am in the morning, the villagers set fire to the 'meji' (a bonfire lit for the ceremonial conclusion and prayer to the God of Fire) and offered prayers.

The tiny tots of the village gathered around their 'hero' Boro, while the elders paid tribute to the BTC Chief, terming him as "the pride of the village".

Boro expressed hope that the problems of society will be eradicated by the sacred fire of the 'meji'. "The COVID scare is now starting to abate -- we hope that the fire of the 'meji' will make the problems disappear altogether. I hope all tribes and communities will come together for the upliftment," he said after after setting fire to the bonfire.

Exuding happiness at being able to celebrate Bihu in his native village, Promod Boro at the same time said that several initiatives have to be undertaken to ameliorate the problems of the village. "We are dealing with a lot of problems here. Erosion during monsoons is a major cause of worry. Moreover, the school where I studied once is also not in a good shape -- therefore, all these problems have to be looked at in detail and hopefully, resolved."

Promod Boro was sworn in as the new CEM in the BTC on December last after a high octane election that saw power wrested away from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) despite its winning the highest number of Seats (17) in the Council polls. In the last 17 years, the 40-member BTC was ruled by former CEM Hagrama Mahilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
