Guwahati, June 22, 2019:

The Assam Government's 'clearance' to let four elephants to be taken to 'Jagganath Yatra' in Gujarat has caused a situation of uproar in the State, including protests from many corners.

Many wildlife lovers and other organizations have started a series of protests against this alleged violation of animal rights. The activists have already started protests and demanded that the elephants should not be transported to Gujarat. They have alleged that the elephants are being transported out of pure greed for money and have condemned the situation.

The four elephants who are to be transported to Gujarat are: Rani, Bablu, Rup Singh, and Jaytara. It is being alleged that these elephants are being exploited for the sake of money. Although 53 elephants have been transported outside Tinsukia to other states, it is unclear how many have returned.

Moreover, A PIL by an NGO has been filed in Gauhati High Court to restrain Assam from dispatching the four elephants from Tinsukia of Assam to Ahmedabad in Gujarat for participating in the annual Rath Yatra festival to be held there on July 4, 2019.

The PIL has been filed by ‘Avinava Prayash’ an NGO of Guwahati, represented by its Secretary, Urmi Mala Das ( an Animal Rights Activist, freelance writer, and blogger) and Nandini Baruah (Fashion Designer and runs ‘Purr Paws Foundation’ for street animals at Guwahati).

Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi has also appealed to the central government to intervene into the matter. He wrote to the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, GoI, Prakash Javedkar to take immediate step to stop the transportation.

Meanwhile, veterinarians have put the Assam Government in a spot of bother as they have refused to accompany four elephants to Gujarat.
