Guwahati: Member of Parliament from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque has alleged that there has been widespread corruption in both the central and state governments during 2019-20 while the country battling the COVID-19 situation.

Abdul Khaleque while speaking to the media said, "We are noticing that the COVID situation is improving in the country as well as in Assam but it is now clear that a widespread corruption happened in both central and state governments during 2019 and 2020."

He added that All India Congress Committee leader Rahul Gandhi has exposed how a "total failure" in the system occurred across the country under the Narendra Modi-led BJP government during the attempt to combat COVID, which is "a matter of shame and it has also come to light that the government is taking the help of liars." Rahul Gandhi has said that the Gujarat model became a subject of discussion throughout the country during the COVID19 pandemic.

He added, "The majority of people who were talked to about the subject have said in one voice that during the pandemic most people did not get beds in the hospitals or ICUs or ventilators when the need arose. Most Covid patients in Ahmedabad died due to the lack of ICUs and ventilators."

According to figures by the Gujarat government, a total of 10,000 people in the state died of Covid. "But Congress workers and leaders in Gujarat found during a house-to-house survey that at least 3 lakh people died. In a state like Gujarat, the home state of the country’s Prime Minister, only 10,000 people received one-time relief of only Rs 50,000 each", he added.

He claimed that the rest of the 2,5 lac people have not received a single rupee till now.

"Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has placed this fact in front of the people with complete data. This is not the story of Gujarat only. The picture is the same across the country. Assam’s picture was very frightening. People suffering from Covid faced immense problems in getting ICUs and ventilators in hospitals in different places of Assam", Khaleque added.

He added that many people lost their lives due to the lack of proper planning by the government. "Instead of providing courage to the general people to fight against the pandemic, an atmosphere of fear was created through propaganda, leading to suicides by a large number of people. A total of 3243 people in the state opted for suicide", he said.

According to statistics, there was an increase of 36 percent in suicides from 2019 to 2020.

He demanded an answer from the Assam government as to what situation forced people to commit suicide.
