Almost a year after a Facebook post in which he had lamented being "ignored" by the BJP, veteran Assam politician R P Sarmah was officially inducted into the Congress by bigwigs such as Tarun Gogoi, Ripun Bora, et al.
During his formal induction, Sarmah said that he holds a "grudge" against the BJP, and promised to "take revenge" in the 2021 elections. The former Tezpur MP also exuded confidence that the Congress will win 80 seats and win the elections scheduled to be held in 2021.
Sarmah recalled that in the past, he was an NSUI general secretary of district level and said that he has always had a connection with the grand old party. Sarmag also added that he would work to strengthen the party's base and rally people of all tribes and communities to ensure a Congress win.
Reacting to Sarmah's joining the Congress, BJP President Ranjeet Dass has said that R P Sarmah does not have "TRP" (television rating points) and expressed confidence that the BJP party will emerge victorious, when all is said and done.
Weighing in on this, Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia has slammed the BJP party as "fair weather friends".
"Look, BJP is now saying that Sarmah does not have TRP. TRP is something that can only be related to television. Whereas, not too long ago, he was one of the handful MPs BJP had in Assam. However, now that they are in power, his contribution is supposedly being overlooked. This should not be happening."
