With the murmurs of a BJP-AGP reunion getting louder as the elections approach, senior AGP leaders continue to desert the party due to a lack of core ideology and an alleged ‘dual standard’. While the party claims to stand for the indigenous people of the state, at the same time, senior party leaders including President Atul Bora keep floating the possibility of reuniting with old masters, the BJP. It is because of these reasons that AGP spokesperson Dilip Bora’s resignation from the AGP and decision to join Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) comes as no surprise.
AGP spokesperson, Dibash Phukan, has announced his departure from the party due to its lack of a “concrete ideology”. Phukan also lamented the lack of fresh faces and alleged that the old times in the party are running it into the ground. Phukan, while announcing his departure from the party, added that he would join the NPP.
In his resignation, Phukan wrote: “The biggest regional party of the Northeast the Asam Gana Parishad has failed to represent the interests of the indigenous people in a desired or expected manner, and thus, we are disappointed in them. Despite three of the topmost leaders of the party abdicating ministerial posts under your leadership, the party has not been able to take any concrete resolution regarding their Lok Sabha election strategy and thus, people have lost faith in them. We refuse to be part of a political party that disappoints the people of Assam and does not look after their best interests. So with immense sadness, I am announcing my immediate departure from primary membership and would also like to renounce my duties as state spokesperson, publicity secretary, and Advertising Committee member through this letter.”
