GUWAHATI: Assam boy Samir Banerjee, who is a 17-year-old Indian-origin tennis player from New Jersey, USA, made his dream come true by winning the Wimbledon 2021 Boy's Singles title after defeating his American adversary Victor Livov in straight sets.

Samir defeated Livov 7-5, 6-3 in under 1 hour 21 minutes.

Banerjee only dropped three sets in his past five matches on his way to the final.

He didn't let any of the games last longer than an hour and 45 minutes. Banerjee defeated Poland's 12th seed Maks Kasnikowski 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in his first-round match. Banerjee faced Slovakia's Peter Benjamin Privara in the second round, which he won 6-1, 5-6, 6-1.

He then went on to beat Brazilian Pedro Boscardin Dias, the 5th seed, 6-2, 6-1. Banerjee defeated Mili Poljicak of Croatia 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

On Saturday, Samir qualified to the final after defeating Frenchman Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in the semifinals.

He also reached the semi-finals of Boy's doubles event, where he teamed up with Kokoro Isomura of Japan, but lost 4-6, 2-6.

Samir's grandfather Hiranmoy Banerjee was a General Manager with Oil India Limited in Duliajan. His father initially studied in Duliajan before emigrating to the US.

He said he has been playing since he was six and was initially interested in a variety of sports, but he gradually developed a passion for tennis.
