Guwahati, April 6, 2019:

Somewhat surprisingly, the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP Government has been rated ‘below average’ by the people in a survey conducted by election watchdogs Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and RA Asterisc Computing & Data Solutions.

‘The Assam Survey Report – 2018’ provides an analysis of 10 most important governance issues as rated by voters of Assam. The survey covered approximately 7,000 voters of Assam across all of its 14 Lok Sabha Constituencies.

Top three priorities of the people of Assam, as per the survey are: better employment opportunities (47.99%), better hospitals/primary healthcare centers (45.78%), and better roads (34.56%). The performance of the Government on all three top voters’ priorities of better employment opportunities (2.04/5), better hospitals/primary healthcare centers (2.08/5), and better roads (2.3/5) was rated as ‘below average’ by the people.

In fact, the performance of the Government was rated as ‘below average’ in both rural and urban voters’ priorities.

The report also studied the influencing factors of the voting behavior of the candidates highest percentage of voters said candidate’s Party was the most significant reason (Important: 41% and Very Important: 43%) for voting for a candidate in an election. This was followed by the CM Candidate (Important: 40% and Very Important: 43%) and the Candidate himself/herself (Important: 52% and Very Important: 28%).

In summation, the Assam Survey Report 2018 points to the fact that voters‟ priorities in Assam have been largely neglected by the government in power. This is quite clear from the fact that the government has performed poorly and underwhelmingly on all 10 governance issues as rated by the voters of Assam.
