GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has tendered his resignation as an MLA from the Majuli Assembly constituency today.
He has tendered his resignation to the Speaker of the Assam State Assembly, Biswajit Daimary.
Sonowal stated in the letter to Daimary, "I hereby tender the resignation of my seat in the Assembly with effect from today, 28th September 2021."
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam unopposed as no other candidate filed nomination papers for the seat.
He filed his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha on September 21,
In the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, and water resources minister Pijush Hazarika, Sonowal who is also the former Assam Chief Minister received the winner's certificate from the Assam Assembly Secretariat.
The Assembly by-elections will be held on October 30, 2021, according to the Election Commission.
The Assembly by-polls in the state of Assam will be held for Five Assembly constituencies--41-Bhabanipur, 28-Gossaigaon, 101-Mariani, 58-Tamulpur, and 107-Thowra.
As CM Himanta Biswa Sarma appointed Sonowal as a Cabinet minister in Narendra Modi led BJP government. However, Sonowal needed to be elected to the Rajya Sabha in order to keep his current position in the central government.
The Assam Rajya Sabha by-election was scheduled for October 4, 2021, but because no other candidate was fielded by any party or candidate, Sonowal was declared the winner of the Rajya Sabha by-elections.
