SC Extends Deadline for Publication of Assam NRC to August 31

New Delhi, July 23, 2019:
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the deadline for publication of the final National Register of Citizen (NRC) for Assam till August 31. Earlier, it was scheduled to be published on July 31.
At the same time, the Court turned down the request of the Union and Assam Governments to conduct 20℅ sample re-verification of draft NRC in the bordering areas of the State.
It is to be mentioned that a two-judge bench chaired by CJI Ranjan Gogoi on July 19 heard on the matter of publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the appeal of re-verification before publishing the final draft, for which the further hearing will be held on July 23. Meanwhile, the NRC co-ordinator Prateek Haleja has brought to light the fact that there was an issue of serious floods in Assam which have further slowed down the NRC process and thus supported the demand for extension of the deadline of NRC publication.

Assam Public Works (APW) working president Abhijeet Sharma briefed that they had appealed for the re-verification of NRC draft in 22 districts, especially in Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang, South Salmara, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup rural and metro, Darang Udalguri, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Nagaon Hujai, Golaghat, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.
