JORHAT: At a time when state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been busy distributing scooters among meritorious students just ahead of the elections and introducing a scheme to provide Rs 100 to every girl student per day of attendance, his health department, that has been waging a war against an unprecedented crisis of COVID pandemic, has been gasping for a fresh lease of life.

Security personnel of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) here have staged a strike accusing their employer Saraighat Security and Service of Guwahati of failing to pay them on time.

Sources told Inside Northeast that the security guards have not been paid a single penny over the past three months. The medical college requires 80 security guards, but is being managed by only 64 personnel.

They further added that during the time of their appointment, every security guard had to pay Rs 5000 for their uniform. However, these guards are yet to be entitled to provident fund or employees’ state insurance scheme.

Pointing out the security company’s indifference towards the security guards, agitating personnel said the company’s owner Bikul Bora showed reluctance to help one of his employees who is admitted to the hospital following a cardiac arrest.
