An early morning tragedy has struck Assam's Tinsukia district on the occasion of 'Mahalaya', just ahead of Durga Puja
Early in the morning, at Rangagara road, as many as eight pedestrians who participated in the Mahalaya rally were rammed by a speeding Toyota Innova bearing registration number AS03 H2223. A woman, who has been identified as Borguri Numali Baruah, died later after she had been admitted to a hospital, due to the serious nature of her injuries. Four of the injured have been referred to Dibrugarh Medical College, for treatment. Another two succumbed to their injuries later.
The driver of the vehicle, Gaurav Dey, was also beaten black and blue by an angry mob of witnesses, and he too has been shifted to a hospital.
A witness said that many people were trying to stop the speeding vehicle, but the no avail. "I could see as many as four immobile bodies which had been rammed by the Innova. I myself had tried to stop him but to no avail. It only slowed down when it collided with another vehicle."
