A tweet posted by a Mumbai resident named Aashish Shetty has raised doubts over the issue of the charge sheet filed against a former FM.
In the tweet, he states about a chargesheet levelled against an IAS officer along with former Finance Minister and son in a high profile case in mid-2018. He also says that the accused has been promoted as Chief Secretary.
The tweet has even been Retweeted by MP Subramanian Swamy. The tweet includes a poll to guess the state of the accused. In that, WB has 49.2%, Maharasthra has 32%, Assam has 12 and Punjab with 5.6%.
As per popular imagination, the Chargesheet where the name of the former Union Min and FM has been said to be the Aircel-Maxis case. The IAS officer name has been alleged to be from Assam due to the deputation in Delhi during the time of the incident.
In 2006, Maxis had taken over Aircel by acquiring a 74% stake. The Aircel-Maxis deal had come under the scanner in 2011 when Aircel owner C Sivasankaran lodged a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleging he had been pressured to sell his stake to Maxis. Sivasankaran also alleged that former Union minister Dayanidhi and his industrialist brother Kalanithi received kickbacks in the form of Maxis group’s investments (through the Astro network) in Sun TV Network, which is owned by the Maran family.
On October 10, the CBI registered a case. The following year, the Enforcement Directorate registered a money-laundering case against the Maran brothers for allegedly receiving illegal compensation of about Rs 5.5 billion in the Aircel-Maxis deal.
