Supreme Court Refuses 'Stay' on Implementation of C(A)A, Next Hearing on January 22

Guwahati, December 18, 2019:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and issued a notice to the Central Government to reply within January 22, 2020.

A three-judges' bench today sat for the first hearing of the contentious Bill-turned-Act. The bench was led by Chief Justice SA Bobde, who heard the petition on the act along with Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant.

As many as 59 writ petitions have been filed against C(A)A so far in the Supreme Court, out of which, 14 are filed by different organizations from Assam.

The SC has refused to stay the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. It said it will hear all the 59 pleas challenging the Act on January 22.

The Citizenship Amendment Act that was enacted recently after it cleared both the Houses of the Parliament continues to rock the nation with protests.

Meanwhile, students from internationally renowned Universities such as Oxford and Harvard, have also joined in the protests.

After the uprisings that began in the Northeastern region of India, and spread to other parts of the country like a wildfire, the sustained and widespread protests against the C(A)A are continuing unabated in many parts of the world.

Recently, over 400 students from different US universities have issued a joint statement expressing solidarity with Jamia and AMU students lathi-charged by the Delhi Police during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that turned violent.
