SILCHAR: If reports are to be believed, former Assam MP from Congress Sushmita Dev, who has recently resigned from the party, is likely to join the Trinamool Congress led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sushmita Dev, who had been with the Congress party for the past three decades, has tendered her resignation through a letter to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi.

In her letter, Dev said that she is “beginning a new chapter of public service”

Dev, one of the most popular politicians from Barak Valley, is likely to lead the state branch of Trinamool Congress of Tripura.

Sushmita Dev’s former colleagues and Assam CLP leader Debabrata Saikia has also confirmed the reports.

Sushmita Dev is likely to meet TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee and MP Abhisekh Banerjee in Kolkata today. The former MP is likely to return to Barak Valley on Tuesday.

Party insiders say Dev has been offered the CM candidature from Trinamool Congress in the upcoming Tripura polls. Notably, TMC leaders have been actively trying to set foot on the BJP stronghold for the past few month. The party has also roped in political strategist Prashant Kishor to make a roadmap to hold power in Tripura.

After Sushmita Dev’s resignation, Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora has called a press conference in Guwahati.

Party insiders say she decided to leave as she was unhappy with the Congress party’s performance in the Lok Sabha polls.

Dev, unhappy with the Congress-AIUDF's also threatened to leave the party in the lead up to the Assembly polls earlier this year, but was coaxed out of doing so by the party leadership.
