Assam police encounter spree continues: suspected rhino poacher shot at near Kaziranga

BOKAKHAT: The Assam police in continuance with its encounter spree on Wednesday shot at a rhino poacher in his leg while he tried to escape custody.

The poacher identified as Thangouchin V Khamkhopau, a member of the Zomi Revolutionary Organisation (ZRO) was arrested in an alleged rhino poaching last week.

He was shot by Bokakhat police in the leg on Wednesday evening in Panbari Reserve Forest, located near the Kaziranga National Park.

Reportedly, Khamkhopau tried to escape by snatching a police gun while he was taken to the forest to locate a hidden weapon by a team of Bokakhat police led by a Sub-Divisional police officer.

Juel Gogoi, a police constable, was also injured during the police firefight.

Later, both of them were taken to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) for medical treatment.

V Khamkhopau was apprehended from Churachandpur district of Manipur on charges of poaching and trading of animal parts in Kaziranga National Park.
