Tarun Gogoi And Rakibul Hussain Removed From Assam Olympic Association

Guwahati, July 11, 2019:

The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) has removed former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain from their posts in the association. The action came after the AOA failed to conduct the election.

Tarun Gogoi was appointed as the President and Rakibul Hussain had been appointed as the Secretary-General of the AOA.

In an official statement issued on July 9, 2019, it was stated: “The Assam Olympic Association is an affiliated member of the Indian Olympic Association so they are bound to abide the rules and regulation of the IOA to continue its membership. The election of the Federation/ association member unit of IOA is due when complete a four years term from the date of the election held and the office barriers and council members of the Federation/ association becomes invalid when they complete the term of four years.”

The annual general meeting held on December 22, 2018, discussed the issue of the AOA and had unanimously approved to form Ad-Hoc Committee for state Olympic association in Assam and conduct the election.

The statement further stated, “A letter dated 22.12.2018 received from Rakibul Hussain, General Secretary, AOAsaying that the association is intending to hold general body meeting on February 24, 2019, in Guwahati, Assam for electing office bearers. Further on February 22, 2019, another letter was sent to IOA by the AOA giving the activities of the AOA and also saying that they had already initiated process for holding the meeting on February 24, 2019 at 11 am in Guwahati, but they failed to give any valid explanation for not conducting the election in time.”

So the General Assembly of the IOA, that formed the Ad-Hoc Committee with Dr. Surindra Mohan Bali as Chairman, Mushtaque Ahmad, and Sunil Elangbam as the member has been given a time period of six months to conduct the election.

“The Electoral College for conducting the election should be prepared in consultation with the concerned National Sports Federation’s and share with IOA foe its information and needful,” added the statement.
