Tarun Gogoi health condition "critical but stable", he opened his eyes today: GMCH Superintendent

GUWAHATI: "Early in the morning today, Tarun Gogoi opened his eyes and motor movement was observed. Although he is critical, he is stable hemodynamically and we expect that he should come out of this very soon," Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Abhijit Sharma said today, giving an update on the ailing leader's health. Tarun Gogoi was yesterday put on intubation and ventilator after his health condition turned "critical."

Sharma further informed that Gogoi's laboratory parameters have improved since yesterday, adding that the "main reason for concern" is the lack of urine. "However, there is no deterioration in his condition and laboratory results are good.

"We are keeping dialysis as a last resort but a lot of modalities have to be undertaken. Therefore, we are hoping that there is a natural release of urine," he said, adding, "The exact picture is very difficult to say right now, but we are keeping him under observation for 48 hours."

Earlier, it was reported that Gogoi was “critical” and had been put under non-invasive ventilation. GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma on November 20 told media that he was maintaining oxygen saturation of around 96-97% and his urine output had decreased. He also admitted that if Gogoi’s condition did not improve, he would have to undergo dialysis.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited the GMCH to make an assessment of Gogoi’s health earlier yesterday evening said that the former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi’s health condition is critical with multi-organ failure following post-Covid complications.

The former chief minister was first admitted to the GMCH on August 26 after he tested positive for COVID-19. His condition has continued to deteriorate since then, with doctors stating that he is struggling to recover from post COVID complications.
