Ten people were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in Wednesday’s lynching of a “cattle thief” by a mob at Diplunga Tea Estate in Biswanath district.
The persons arrested were identified as Sankar Munda, Dewan Munda, Karma Munda, Toofan Munda, Mahendra Kachar, Jibon Patar, Keshab Ghatowar, Amit Ghatowar, Hari Singh Pator and Pranab Turi.
In the wee hours of Wednesday, the mob intercepted an auto van and brutally beat up its occupants, Deben Rajbongshi, Phoolchand Sahu, Bijoy Nayak and Pujen Rajbongshi, suspecting them to be cattle thieves. Later, Deben succumbed to his injuries. The three others were admitted to a hospital.
In a video of the incident that went viral on the social media, the injured victims were seen lying on the ground and pleading to the assailants with folded hands to spare their lives. They said they were going to a place to buy pigs but the mob kept assaulting them.
