Three convicts, languishing at the Mangaldoi district jail, secured positions in Top-10 of the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) under KK Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU). BPP is equivalent to Class XII.
Out of the three, Arupjyoti Deka, who is undergoing life imprisonment, secured the top position with 80.33 per cent marks. He secured letter marks in four subjects.
Two other inmates, Dhrubajyoti and Ilias Purti, secured 6th and 10th position respectively. Seven inmates of the jail had appeared in the examination and all of them passed.
It may be mentioned that Arupjyoti, who was convicted for murder, is the jail’s librarian and editor of a monthly wall magazine. The hand-written magazine, which is his brainchild, was first published on Independence Day in 2015. It was launched with help and cooperation from the then jail superintendent, jailer and a few others.
Arupjyoti had got the first issue published with literary contributions from just four inmates. Now, there are at least 40 inmates helping him.
