Guwahati, January 24, 2020:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) supremo Akhil Gogoi was on Friday presented at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court in Guwahati, Assam. Gogoi, addressing Assam at large through the means of the media, urged the people to launch a mass resistance movement against the Government's policies, and said that the time for "peaceful" demonstrations is over.

Gogoi, addressing mediapersons outside the Court, urged the people of Assam to stage massive protests against the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Lamenting that the protests against the CAA have decreased in intensity, Gogoi warned that if the people do not take to the streets again to register their protests, the Assamese people stand to lose their identity.

"Our people are being arrested...people of Assam know that. The protests are losing their intensity. Time for peaceful protests is over...now is the time to launch mass resistance to force the hand of the Government.. If the protests are not carried out unitedly, the Assamese people shall be betrayed", Akhil told the mediapersons.

Gogoi was arrested from Jorhat in Assam on December 12 last while leading a mass movement against the CAA, a day after it was passed in the Rajya Sabha.

It may be mentioned here that four leaders affiliated to the farmer organization have been arrested by the NIA. Apart from Gogoi, his deputy Dhairjya Konwar, and Bitu Sonowal have been booked by the NIA under the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act UAPA for ‘waging war against the nation’ and accused of being a ‘Maoist’.
