Dispur MLA and senior BJP leader, Atul Bora, on Sunday said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, would prove if he is the “Jatiya Nayak” or not.
Speaking on the controversial bill, Bora said he had opposed the bill earlier and would continue to do so.
“A lot of promises were made during the election to protect jati, mati and bheti but now, nothing of that sort is seen as the government itself has brought in a bill that will make the Assamese community a minority in their own state,” Bora said.
He said the BJP was free to take any action against him for his opposition to the bill.
“The AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) gave Sarbananda Sonowal the title of Jatiya Nayak and now it is time for him to prove it. If he is the Jatiya Nayak then he must oppose the bill,” Bora said.
It may be mentioned the bill seeks to give settlement to the illegal immigrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Jain, Christian and Buddhist communities who migrated to India till December 31, 2014.
