An Indian Air Force Microlite helicopter crashed in Majuli island in Assam on Thursday noon. The tragedy took place in Darbar Sapori  near Ponoimari village after taking off from Jorhat IAF station. Wreckage of the two seater Microlite helicopter were found in Sumoimari. Two pilots on board have been killed in the crash. Those killed have been identified as wing commander Jai Paul James and wing commander D Vats.

The reason behind the crash is yet to be ascertained. The Microlite helicopter was on a routine recce from Jorhat Indian Air Force Station. Police and officials from the administration immediately rushed to the spot. The place of occurrence is reported to be remote surrounded by water bodies. An inquiry has been ordered.

It may be mentioned that Arunachal Pradesh has a history of crashes due to bad weather. Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Dorjee Khandu too died in a chopper crash in 2011.
