DIGBOI: In a show of strength, or rather existence, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah's visits to Assam, the Paresh Baruah led faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (or ULFA-I) yesterday claimed responsibility for orchestrating a blast near the headquarters of the 3 Garhwal Regiment in Tinsukia's Digboi town.
"A bomb blast occurred on January 22 evening around 6:45 PM at the camp of the 3 no. Garhwal Regiment in Digboi town. The ULFA (I) orchestrated the blast," read a statement issued in Assamese by Captain Deep Axom of the proscribed outfit.

Meanwhile, the ULFA (I) has called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations in the State. The militant outfit yesterday released a statement calling for its customary ‘general strike’ on January 26, appealing to the people of the region to boycott the Republic Day celebrations.
“This so called Republic Day of India is opposed to our ideals and hence we have been opposing it. We call upon all political and apolitical people of WeSEA (West-Eastern South East Asia) to boycott the celebrations of this Indian political event,” the ULFA-I said in a statement.
Last year, amid high-security measures ahead of the 71st Republic Day, a series of five bomb explosions rocked Upper Assam in the morning hours.
