The anti-talks faction of insurgent group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-Independent) has rubbished a report of news portal “lookeast.in” that said the outfit’s “commander-in-chief” Paresh Baruah died in a road mishap at Ruili along China-Myanmar border recently.
In a statement emailed to media houses in Assam, the outfit termed the report as a “hoax spread out by people with vested interest”.
“We, the “United Liberation Front of Asom [Independent]” have noticed that a fake news with regard to our vice chairman-cum-chief of staff h’ble major general Paresh Asom sir has been circulated in a section of media about his so-called accident & death. We would like to clarify to our freedom-loving people of Asom that our leader is safe and sound and has not met (with) any accident. This is a hoax spread out by people with vested interest. We appeal to the people of Asom not to believe in this kind of propaganda regarding our leader in future,” Romel Axom, a member of the publicity wing of ULFA-Independent, said in the statement.
Earlier in the day, Assam’s additional director general of police, Pallab Bhattacharya, said, “We have received reports that claimed ULFA-I C-in-C Paresh Baruah is no more but this info is yet to be confirmed”.
