GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Asom Independent (ULFA-I) has taken the Assam Police and the Home Department of the state at gunpoint for allegedly spreading 'baseless rumours' against the organisation in a statement today.

The ULFA's jibe came after a piece of news was published in an Assamese newspaper claiming that the insurgents have demanded money from commercial institutions in Upper Assam.

"After announcing unilateral ceasefire for three months on 15/05/2021, ULFA (I) has never been indulged in incidents like demanding money from any commercial institutions or tea garden authorities," ULFA (I) clarified in the released statement.

ULFA (I) also condemned the news organisation for publishing such a 'baseless' news article in the first place and asked them to be "sensible" in the future.

Coming down heavily upon the Assam police, ULFA (I) said, "Why the Assam Police, undertaken by the Home Department of Assam, to hide their own incompetency, have chosen to pitch such a rumour on ULFA (I) without any evidence, we felt the necessity of Home Department to inform the public about our security forces actual intention."

ULFA (I)  added, "It is not something new when the Indian Army and Assam Police have intentionally tried to conspire against ULFA (I) to defame them systematically."

ULFA (I) also alleged that the home department expressed in the news article that if they can financially weaken the ULFA (I), then ULFA (I) will be bound to sit for a discussion.

"We want to clarify again that "United Liberation Front of Asom Independent" believe in ethical discussion. On the other hand, never sat down for a discussion due to financial crunch, nor will," said ULFA (I) in their released statement.

Notably, following two grenade blasts in Tinsukia last month, the ULFA (I) has announced a unilateral ceasefire for three months, as the state is already struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic, when the authority accused them responsible for the incidents.

Though later when police apprehended two in connection with the Tingrai market blast, the Assam Police had established that the two accused indeed have connections to ULFA.
