Guwahati, August 11, 2019:

In recent times, social media has become the most accessible platform for hatemongers and militant organizations to spread their messages due to its wide reach and ease of use. As a result, organizations like ISIS have used the cyber space as a recruiting platform and also as a means of spreading propaganda. Similarly, the outlawed organization from Assam, United Liberation Front of Asom, Independent (ULFA-I) has also been using social media to spread its message to the masses.

In the run up to India's 73rd Independence Day, the organization has been accused of trying to spread 'anti-India' messages through social media, and recently, the security forces foiled a bid of the militant organization to upload an anti-national video on social media.

Official sources told Inside Northeast that once such posts come to the attention of the authorities, they are instantly marked, and forwarded to the cyber cell for review and action (if required).

The Assam police authorities have informed that they continue to remain unfazed despite attempts by the ULFA and other proscribed groups to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations. Guwahati's Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar told Inside Northeast that  the police force is upto the task of thwarting the ULFA's plans. “They are greatly weakened, thus, they are desperate to make their presence felt”, he added.
