JORHAT: Prayers for the eternal peace of 3-time former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were held today in a nondescript school in Jorhat district of Upper Assam. Unbeknownst to most, Gogoi taught in this school in Mariani for close to a year in the 1950's. His salary? A mere 100 bucks!

In the Mariani Mahadev Agarwalla Higher Secondary School, Gogoi is still revered even though the students and the teachers probably weren't even born when he walked its halls as a teacher. To mark his demise, students and teachers observed a minute's silence. It was as if a pin drop could be heard during those moments.

Gogoi's name on the teachers' rolls; his salary was Rs. 100

A pall of gloom has descended on the school where Gogoi taught several decades ago, and both the teachers and the students are still mourning the demise of the charismatic leader. Gogoi, it needs mention here, spent his formative years in Upper Assam, where he initially moulded.

"We deeply condole his demise. Gogoi taught in this very school in 1958 before venturing into politics. We are remembering him with the utmost respect. We have organized a one-minute silence for the former Chief Minister. He worked here for a year and was paid a salary of Rs. 1,000," one of the teachers of the school told media.
